Comparing Granite and Quartz Countertops

Granite is a natural stone that comes directly from stone quarries. It is then cut into thin slabs, polished, and then fabricated into countertops, making each granite slab different in mineral pattern and color. No two counters will be the same, making Granite more unique and distinctive. Granite is a more porous stone that requires periodic sealing (every 6-9 months), but the 100% stone makes it almost completely scratch resistant.

Quartz on the other hand is engineered to create its color and pattern by mixing crushed quartz crystal and resin, making the appearance more uniform. Being man-made also means that the colors and patterns can be adjusted. Quartz does not require sealing because of the resin used during fabrication, making is lower maintenance. Resin also makes Quartz more resistant to water, staining, and mold & mildew.

Both Granite and Quartz can handle heat, but direct high heat exposure is not recommended. It’s best to protect all countertops from high heat.
