Accessory dwelling unit
Accessory Dwelling Unit in Portland, OR
A Portland ADU built for a family juggling a home sale, refinance, and a parent moving into a new backyard residence.
What mattered on this project
This project had more moving pieces than a normal backyard ADU. The family needed the new home to come together while they were managing the sale of one house, refinancing another, and keeping everyone housed during the transition.
The L-shaped kitchen was not the standard layout, but it matched the way this family needed the home to work. It meant less room for a kitchen table, but it gave the family a compact ADU that fit the parent-dwelling plan.
Project highlights
- Balanced an aging-parent move with a larger family housing transition.
- Used an L-shaped kitchen layout that fit how the family needed the home to work.
- Included a more solid interior shell with CDX plywood throughout.
